Autograph letter signed, dated : Lucerne, 27 August 1831, to W[ilhelm] Taubert, 1831 Aug. 27.

Thanking him for the pleasure his songs gave Mendelssohn in Milan, expressing pleasure that another musician in the world has the same purpose and aspirations as oneself, bemoaning the fact that in Italy music no longer exists among the people, expressing the hope that they can exchange honest opinions of each other's works, asking if Taubert has composed any large works--a symphony or opera, perhaps--, saying that he himself has a very strong urge to write an opera, that he has begun a cantata of Goethe's, speaking harshly of Menzel, Grabbe, and "the philosophers" who criticize Goethe, Shakespeare, and Schiller, saying that he will continue to work quietly in these strange, wild, and troubled times, mentioning [Ludwig] Berger, etc., etc.
